Three sub-species - Java, Bali and Caspian - are already extinct and the South China sub-species is critically endangered.

It turns out the Caspian sub-species is genetically identical to the Siberian tiger and there are plans to re-establish populations in Central Asia using Siberian tigers. A major problem is finding suitably large habitat areas with enough prey species.
