How Did Pusheen Start? The Story Behind the Adorable Cat
Before Pusheen was a favourite plush, sticker and stationery character, she started as a simple cartoon cat making everyday life a little more fun. With her relaxed personality, love of snacks and talent for getting into cosy mischief, Pusheen quickly became a character people wanted to see again and again.
So how did Pusheen start, and how did this sleepy grey cat become such a recognisable name around the world?
Pusheen began as a webcomic
Pusheen first appeared in 2010 as a character in a webcomic created by Claire Belton and Andrew Duff. The comic was published on their website, Everyday Cute, and followed Pusheen through familiar, funny moments at home.
Instead of giving Pusheen complicated superpowers or a dramatic backstory, the comics focused on things that felt instantly relatable: relaxing, eating, playing, celebrating special occasions and enjoying the small pleasures of daily life.
Where did the name Pusheen come from?
The name “Pusheen” comes from the Irish word puisín, which means kitten. It is a fitting name for a character whose appeal comes from being cute, curious and just a little bit cheeky.
Why did Pusheen become so popular?
Pusheen’s success comes down to a very clever idea: ordinary moments can be entertaining. She does not need to be saving the world to be worth following. A lazy afternoon, a favourite meal or a cosy night in can all become a tiny Pusheen adventure.
That everyday personality makes Pusheen easy to recognise and easy to relate to. Fans can see themselves in her love of snacks, naps, hobbies and quiet time, while the simple artwork makes each expression instantly readable.
From webcomic character to internet favourite
As more people discovered the comics, Pusheen spread beyond the original webcomic. Her expressive poses and short, shareable moments made her a natural fit for online conversations, digital stickers and social media.
She also developed a world of themes and personalities. Pusheen could be a chef, gamer, explorer, superhero, mermaid or simply a cat enjoying a snack. These playful variations gave fans new ways to find a Pusheen that matched their own interests.
Pusheen’s love of food
Food is one of Pusheen’s most recognisable recurring themes. From cakes and cookies to sushi, pizza and fruit, snacks are part of what makes her world feel warm and funny. A food-themed Pusheen is not just a cute character, it is a tiny celebration of something people already enjoy.
That is why food-inspired plush designs remain so popular. The Pusheen Plush 28cm Squisheen Avocado Toast brings that playful food personality to life, while the Pusheen Plush Sips - Strawberry Milk is perfect for fans who love cosy café-style designs.
How Pusheen became a collectible favourite
As Pusheen’s audience grew, the character naturally moved into books, accessories, stationery, homewares and plush. Plush toys are especially popular because they turn a flat cartoon character into something fans can hug, display and collect.
A classic design is a great way to start. The Pusheen Plush Classic 30cm captures the familiar look that made the character so loved in the first place. For fans who prefer a themed design, the Pusheen Plush 24cm Cozy Winter adds a soft seasonal feel.
Why Pusheen still feels special
Pusheen has stayed popular because she makes room for every kind of fan. You can love her for the humour, the food themes, the soft colours, the collectible designs or simply the comfort of seeing a familiar character having a quiet day.
She also reminds us that small joys count. Pusheen does not rush through every moment. She takes time to enjoy a treat, relax with friends and make ordinary days feel a little more special.
The story continues
What started as a webcomic character has grown into a much-loved world of stories, designs and collectibles. The basic idea has never changed: Pusheen is a cute cat doing relatable things, and that is more than enough to make people smile.
